Using AI Without Turning Off Your Brain

Like most, I’ve been having lots of conversations about AI, and opinions range from “it’s fantastic!” to “it’s terrifying!”. The reality is that AI is quickly becoming part of everyday work. We are using it to write emails, summarize reports, brainstorm ideas, solve problems, and even make decisions faster. And honestly, it can be incredibly helpful.

However, if we rely on AI to do all our thinking, our critical thinking skills will weaken over time, and so there’s an important balance to keep in mind: AI should support critical thinking, not replace it.

When we’re overloaded or pressed for time, it’s easy to fall into the habit of accepting AI responses at face value because they sound confident and polished. The problem is that AI doesn’t actually “think” the way we do. It doesn’t understand context the way we do, and it can miss nuance, make incorrect assumptions, or confidently provide inaccurate information.

That’s where our critical thinking comes in. Critical thinking involves questioning assumptions, evaluating evidence, considering multiple perspectives, and making sound judgments in situations where answers are often unclear or incomplete.

One of the best ways to use AI is as a thinking partner rather than an answer machine. Instead of asking AI to simply give you the solution, use it to help explore the problem more deeply.

For example, AI can help you:

  • Brainstorm different perspectives
  • Challenge your assumptions
  • Identify possible risks or blind spots
  • Organize complex information
  • Generate questions you may not have considered

The key is to stay curious and engaged in the process. When AI gives you an answer, pause and ask:

  • Does this actually make sense?
  • What might be missing?
  • Would this work in the real world?
  • What are the unintended consequences?
  • What would someone else think about this?

The people who will get the most value from AI won’t be the ones who rely on it without question. They’ll be the ones who know how to question it, test ideas, and combine AI insights with human judgment, experience, and common sense.

AI is a powerful tool. But human critical thinking is still the skill that makes the best decisions possible.
